JOHN MICHAEL SPELMAN, Interim Executive Director

[email protected]

John has a long history with Aldersgate, which spans over fifteen years as a camper, volunteer and staff member, including being the Program Director for two years. He has been working with staff and volunteers for a seamless transition of leadership to be well prepared for the winter retreats and 2018 camp season.

John earned his Bachelor Degree in Political Science from the University of Rhode Island with a minor in International Development. As part of his collegiate experience, he spent time working for a non-profit in Kenya and brought that experience back to Aldersgate to create a global village/social justice emphasis to the summer program. As Program Director, John was directly involved in two accreditation processes and will be taking leadership to ensure Aldersgate maintains its American Camping Association (ACA) accreditation.

John has a passion for adventure/outdoor education and social justice programming; “Aldersgate provides opportunities for campers to unplug, reconnect with nature, and understand the way human rights are manifested every day in both big and small ways. The cornerstone of the Aldersgate experience is creating a sacred, safe place for people to grow in their faith and their relationships with others.”

John is a lifelong resident of Rhode Island and grew up in Asbury United Methodist in Warwick, RI.  As an active member of the East Greenwich United Methodist Church, John leads the Methodist Youth Fellowship and looks forward to continuing and strengthening partnerships between the New England Conference, churches, and Aldersgate. John is married to Rikki Spelman, who also has a long history with Aldersgate as a camper, volunteer, and staff member.  They were married at Aldersgate in October 2013.  While not at camp, they spend their time volunteering, hiking, and traveling.

Becky is from Mexico and graduated college with a degree in Logistics Engineering in 2017. She has been involved in cheerleading, dancing, cooking, leadership programs, and spirituality groups, and is always trying to learn new things. She loves camp because it is a place where everyone is welcome, loved, and accepted.
